TEST OR INSPECTION
1. EXCESSIVE VIBRATION (Cont).
Step 6. Check pinion for pitting,
cracked or broken teeth.
a. If pinion is not okay,
scoring, distortion, deformation, or
replace (page 4-218).
b. If pinion is okay, disassemble differential case and gear assem-
bly (page 4-234) and check ring gear and gears for broken teeth
(page 4-237). Replace defective parts.
2. CONTINUOUS AXLE NOISE.
Raise front axle left or right planetary wheel end off ground and
support with jack stands.
Remove tire and wheel (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).
Remove planetary gear spider, axle shaft, thrust washer, and lock
plate (page 3-366).
Wrap a piece of cord sev-
eral times around wheel
Connect indicating dial
scale to free end of cord.
Pull indicating dial scale
horizontally and smoothly
away from wheel hub.
When indicating dial scale
indication remains con-
stant, note and record
Indication recorded above
should be 8 to 15 pounds.
If recorded indication exceeds 15 pounds, loosen wheel bearing
nut using a 4-3/8 inches wheel bearing nut tool. If recorded
indication is less than 8 pounds, tighten wheel bearing nut.
Wrap a piece of cord several times around wheel hub as above and
If recorded indication is 8 to 15 pounds, go to step 2 below.
