2-9. FRONT AXLE TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION

CORRECTIVE ACTION
2. CONTINUOUS AXLE NOISE (Cont).
Step 2. Remove wheel bearings (page 3-366) and check for damage or wear.
a. If wheel bearings are damaged, replace.
b. If wheel bearings are okay, reinstall parts (page 3-376) and re-
peat steps 1 and 2 above at remaining planetary wheel end. If
all check okay, go to step 3 below.
Step 3.
Remove front axle differential assembly (page 3-362).
Check adjustment of differential bearings (page 4-231).
a. If differential bearings are not adjusted properly, adjust (page
4-231).
b. If differential bearings are adjusted properly, go to step 4 be-
low.
Step 4. Check adjustment of ring gear backlash (page 4-232).
a. If adjustment of ring gear is not okay, adjust (page 4-232).
b. If ring gear adjustment is okay, go to step 5 below.
Step 5. Remove differential case and gear assembly from differential assem-
bly (page 4-218).
Check cone and rollers for wear or damage (page 4-237).
a. If cone and rollers are worn or damaged, replace.
b. If cone and rollers are okay, go to step 6 below.
Step 6.
Check pinion for pitting, scoring, distortion, deformation, or
cracked or broken teeth.
a. If pinion is not okay, replace (page 4-218).
b. If pinion is okay, disassemble differential case and gear assem-
bly (page 4-234) and check ring gear and gears for broken teeth
(page 4-237). Check thrust washers for wear or damage (page
4-237). Replace defective parts.
