Check pinion for pitting, scoring, distortion, deformation, orcracked or broken teeth.a.b.2. CONTINUOUS AXLEStep 1.If pinion is not okay, replace (page 4-218).If pinion is okay, disassemble differential case and gear assem-bly (page 4-234) and check ring gear and gears for broken teeth(page 4-237). Replace defective parts.NOISE.Raise rear axle left or right planetary wheel end off ground andsupport with jack stands.Remove tire and wheel (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).Remove planetary gear spider, axle shaft, thrust washer, and lockplate (page 3-393).Wrap a piece of cord sev-eral times around wheelhub .Connect indicating dialscale to free end of cord.Pull indicating dial scalehorizontally and smoothlyaway from wheel hub.When indicating dial scaleindication remains con-stant, note and record in-dication.Indication recorded aboveshould be 8 to 15 pounds.a. If recorded indication exceeds 15 pounds, loosen wheel bearingnut using a 4-3/8 inches wheel bearing nut tool. If recorded in-dication is less than 8 pounds, tighten wheel bearing nut.Wrap a piece of cord several times around wheel hub as above andrepeat check.b. If recorded indication is 8 to 15 pounds, go to step 2 below.2-105
