3-8. CHARGING SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. ALTERNATOR NOISY.
Check alternator drive belts tension (page 5-2).
a. Adjust drive belts tension as necessary (page 5-5). Replace worn
or damaged belts as a matched set (page 5-4).
b. If belt tension is okay, replace alternator (page 5-10) and for-
ward noisy alternator to next higher maintenance level for re-
p a i r .
2. ALTERNATOR NOT CHARGING BATTERIES.

Avoid contact with skin, eyes,
clothes, and dont breathe vapors.
Step 1.
Check battery specific gravity (page 5-144).

1.225, go to step 2 below.
b . I f c o r r e c t e d s p e c i f i c g r a v i t y o f a n y b a t t e r y c e l l i s l e s s t h an
1.225, charge battery using external charger (page 5-146). Then
go to step 2 below.
Step 2.
Remove engine side panels (page 9-14).
Connect multimeter between alternator BAT terminal and chassis
frame.
Multimeter should indicate 24 volts.
