MALFUNCTION

2. ENGINE HARD TO START OR WILL NOT START (EXHAUST SMOKE) (Cont).
Step 11. (Cont).
a. If backlash exceeds 0.012 inch, replace fuel injection pump
drive gear (page 3-136).
Recheck backlash. If backlash still exceeds 0.012 inch, replace
idler gear (page 4-54).
Perform fuel injection governor adjustments (page 3-14).
b. If backlash does not exceed 0.012 inch, go to Malfunction 1,
page 2-47.
Step 12. Remove cylinder head assemblies (page 3-45).
Remove valve locks, valve retainers, and springs (page 3-74).
Check for bent valves or worn or broken valve spring (page 3-76).
a. If a valve is bent or a valve spring broken, replace (page
3-74).
b. If valves and valve springs are okay, check for incorrectly
installed valve guide (page 4-12).
c. If valve guides are okay, check pistons and cylinder sleeves for
damage; replace as necessary (pages 4-42 and 4-6).
3. ENGINE STARTS BUT WILL NOT RUN.
NOTE
If fuel is pumped through fuel injection pump (refer to TM 5-3805-262-
20) go to step 3 below otherwise go to step 1 below.
Step 1.
At fuel injection pump, check that fuel shutoff lever is completely
opened. (Fuel shutoff lever is completely opened when it is behind
fuel injection pump.)
a. If fuel shutoff lever is not completely opened, adjust fuel
shutoff cable (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).
