2-4. ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
2. ENGINE HARD TO START OR WILL NOT START (EXHAUST SMOKE ) (CONT).
Step 1. (Cont).
a. If fuel shutoff lever is not completely opened, adjust fuel
shutoff cable (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).
Step 2.
b. If fuel shutoff lever is completely opened, go to Malfunction 1,
page 2-47.
Check fuel injector nozzles
for looseness.
a. If fuel injector nozzles
are loose, tighten (page
3-114).
b. If fuel injector nozzles
are not loose, go to step
3 below.
Step 3.
Perform engine compression check (page 3-12).
a. If compression check readings are low, go to step 4 below.
b. If compression check readings are high, go to step 6 below.
c. If compression check readings are normal, go to step 7 below.
Step 4.
Put a small amount of oil in cylinder and repeat engine compression
check (page 3-12).
a. If compression check readings are now normal, replace piston
rings (page 4-42).
b. If compression check readings are still low, go to step 5 below.
