STEERING GEAR MAINTENANCE (CONT) REASSEMBLY (SHEET 1 OF 3)a.If bushing (39) was removed, install new O-ring (40) in housing (41) borefor bushing.b.Put housing (41) in hydraulic press with bushing (39) bore upward. Positionbushing in bore. Using proper size sleeve or rod, press bushing into boreuntil bushing stops moving.c.Put housing (41) in soft jawed vise. Using a screwdriver, start retainingring (38) into groove in housing. Then, push retaining ring into housinggroove.d.Put housing (41) in hydraulic press with bushing (39) upward. Position newseal (31) in bore of bushing with seal lip toward outside of housing. Usingproper size rod, press seal into bushing.e.Install new O-rings (35) on valve spool (34). Large diameter O-ring must beinstalled on threaded end of valve spool.f.Install retainer (37) in valve spool (34) bore. Be sure retainer is flat inbottom of bore.g.Install check ball (36) in valve spool (34) bore.h.Install valve spool (34) in its bore. Be sure threaded end of valve spool isupward.i.Install plug (33). Tighten plug to 100 lb-in.j.Install seal (32) from bottom of housing (41) into bottom of bushing (39).Hold seal in position using your finger. Using screwdriver, push seal intobushing.k.Put oil-soluble grease on O-ring (23). Install O-ring in groove of housing(41).l.Apply clean lubricating oil to outside of valve spool (28) and inside ofsleeve (30). Install valve spool in sleeve. Valve spool must be installedstraight into sleeve. Turn valve spool in both directions as it is pushedinto sleeve.3-518
