TRANSMISSION THEORY OF OPERATION
Transmission uses hydraulic oil to lubricate and cool transmission components, apply
clutches, and turn torque converter turbines.
Main components of transmission are torque converter, free wheel clutch, reverse
clutch, low clutch, high clutch, and necessary gears and shafts to send motion to
output shaft of transmission. Transmission includes items shown.
Torque converter has two turbines. Each turbine is connected to remainder of trans-
mission by a different gear ratio. First turbine has low gear ratio and gives slow
speed with maximum torque. Second turbine has higher gear ratio and gives fast speed
with minimum torque. As operating conditions change, engine power is automatically
sent by correct turbine and gear ratio to remainder of transmission.
Free wheel clutch is connected between driven gear for first turbine and driven gear
for second turbine. Free wheel clutch permits correct turbine to send engine power
to remainder of transmission.
Transmission includes two sets of planetary gears. Reverse clutch is connected to
reverse planetary gears and low clutch is connected to low planetary gears. When re-
verse clutch is applied, power is sent through both sets of planetary gears which
reverses rotation of output shaft. When low clutch is applied, power is sent through
only low planetary gears; low planetary gears give correct gear ratio for low range.
When high clutch is applied, engine power is sent from driven gear for second tur-
bine through sun gear in planetaries to transfer gear to give correct gear ratio for
high range.
