DIFFERENTIAL CARRIER ASSEMBLY OVERHEATING.Remove differential assembly (page 3-390).Disassemble differential assembly (page 4-218).Check for damaged or worn parts.a. If parts are worn or damaged, replace.b. If parts are okay, disassemble differential case and gear assem-bly (page 4-234).Check for damaged or worn parts. Replace wornor damaged parts as necessary.4. LUBRICANT LEAKING FROM DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY.Step 1.Check if lubricant is leaking from between differential assembly andaxle housing.a. If lubricant is leaking from between differential assembly andaxle housing, tighten 14 nuts securing differential assembly to110 to 165 lb-ft.b. If tightening nuts does no good, remove differential assembly(page 3-390) .Scrape gasket residue from rear axle housing and differentialassembly mating surfaces using putty knife.Dry cleaning solvent P-D-680 used to clean parts is toxic and flammable.Wear protective goggles and gloves and use only in a well ventilatedarea. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothes and don’t breathevapors. Do not use near open flame or excessive heat and don-t smokewhen using it. Failure to do so could cause serious injury. If you be-come dizzy while using cleaning solvent, get fresh air and medicalattention immediately. If contact with skin or clothes is made, flushwith large amounts of water.If contact with eyes is made, wash eyeswith water and get medical aid immediately.Clean mating surfaces using clean cloth and cleaning solventP-D-680 .Inspect differential bore in axle housing for cracks, nicks, andburrs at machined surface. If cracked, replace axle (page3-386). Remove nicks and burrs using soft stone.Apply bead of air-drying adhesive (Appendix C, item 34) to dif-ferential assembly and its bore in rear axle housing.Install differential assembly (page 3-390).2-107
