2-10. REAR AXLE TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION

4. LUBRICANT LEAKING FROM DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY (Cont).
Step 1. (Cont).
c. If lubricant is not leaking from between differential assembly
and axle housing go to step 2 below.
Step 2.
Remove differential assembly (page 3-390).
Disassemble differential assembly (page 4-218).
Check pinion oil seal for damage.
a. If pinion oil seal is damaged, replace.
b. If pinion oil seal is okay, check differential assembly housing
for cracks. Replace as necessary.
5. LUBRICANT LEAKING FROM REAR AXLE.
Inspect rear axle housing for cracks or damage.
If rear axle housing is cracked or damaged, replace rear axle (page
3-386) .
6. LUBRICANT LEAKING FROM PLANETARY ASSEMBLY.
Check if capscrews securing rear axle planetary spider are loose.
a. If capscrews are loose, tighten to 90 to 120 lb-ft.
b. If tightening capscrews does no good, remove planetary gear
spider (page 3-393).
Scrape gasket residue from planetary gear spider and wheel hub
mating surfaces using putty knife.
Dry cleaning solvent P-D-680 used to clean parts is toxic and flammable.
Wear protective goggles and gloves and use only in a well ventilated
area. Avoid contact with skin, eyes and clothes and dont breathe
vapors. Do not use near open flame or excessive heat and don-t smoke
when using it. Failure to do so could cause serious injury. If you be-
come dizzy while using cleaning solvent, get fresh air and medical
attention immediately. If contact with skin or clothes is made, flush
with large amounts of water. If contact with eyes is made, wash eyes
with water and get medical aid immediately.
