Prop Shaft Out of Balance
Misalignment of Slip Joint
Unless the prop shaft has been altered in some
The spider assemblies on each end of the prop
way, it usually will not lose balance. Sometimes
shaft must be in the same plane.
small weights are welded to the outside tube to
balance the assembly. If these weights break loose
the shaft will become unbalanced. If this should
happen, the shaft must be rebalanced in a machine
shop equipped to do this.
Faulty Bearings in the Transmission, Converter
or Midmount
If bearings in any of the components in the drive
train fail because of lack of lubrication or improper
adjustment, the first symptoms of failure will appear
as noise or vibration in the drive train. Be certain
to check all of the above before disassembling the
output shaft of the transmission or converter, or
the shaft from the midmount bearing to examine
the bearings.
Faulty Differential Unit
Any problem in the dtfferential unit, such as ex-
cessive backlash or faulty bearings, could set up
a noise or vibration that would appear in the prop
shafts. Make sure that all possible causes have been
checked before disassembling a differential unit
to examine it.
