TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
1. STARTER DOES NOT CRANK (Cont).
Step 5.
Inspect armature commutator bars for dirt or corrosion.
Check for bad contact between brushes and commutator bars.
a. If commutator bars are dirty or corroded, clean or replace arma-
ture. Reassemble starter (page 3-240).
b. If commutator bars check okay, go to step 6 below.
Step 6.
Inspect brush springs and brushes for damage or wear (page 3-236).
a. Replace broken brush springs or worn brushes and reassemble
starter (page 3-240).
b. If brush springs and brushes check okay, go to step 7 below.
Step 7.
Inspect insulators (36) (page 3-231) for wear or damage.
a. Replace defective insulators and reassemble starter (page
3-240) .
b. If insulators check okay, go to step 8 below.
Step 8.
Check that pole shoes
a. If pole shoes are
wrench.
b. If pole shoes are
are tight (step (8), page 3-242).
loose, tighten screws using hand-impact
tight, go to step 9 below.
Step 9.
Test armature (page 3-236).
a. Replace defective armature and reassemble starter (page 3-240).
b. If armature checks okay, go to step 10 below.
Step 10.
Test plate and frame assembly (page 3-234).
a. Replace defective plate and frame assembly and reassemble
starter (page 3-240).
b. If plate and frame assembly checks okay, test field coil (page
3-235). Replace field coil and reassemble starter (page 3-240).
