If bushings check okay, go to step 3 below.
Step 3.
Inspect armature commutator bars for dirt or corrosion.
Check for bad contact between brushes and commutator bars.
a. If commutator bars are dirty or corroded, clean or replace arma-
ture. Reassemble starter (page 3-240).
b.
If commutator bars check okay, go to step 4 below.
Step 4.
Inspect brush springs and brushes for damage or wear (page 3-236).
a. Replace broken brush springs or worn brushes and reassemble
starter (page 3-240).
b. If brush springs and brushes check okay, go to step 5 below.
Step 5.
Inspect insulators (36) (page 3-231) for wear or damage.
a. Replace defective insulators and reassemble starter (page
3-240) .
b. If insulators check okay, go to step 6 below.
Step 6.
Check that pole shoes are tight (step (8), page 3-242).
a. If pole shoes are loose, tighten screws using hand-impact
wrench.
b.
If pole shoes are tight, go to step 7 below.
Step 7.
Test armature (page 3-236).
a. Replace defective armature and reassemble starter (page 3-240).
b. If armature checks okay, go to step 8 below.
Step 8. Test plate and frame assembly (page 3-234).
a. Replace defective plate and frame assembly and reassemble
starter (page 3-240).
b. If plate and frame assembly checks okay, go to step 9 below.
Step 9.
Test field coil (page 3-235).
Replace defective field coil and reassemble starter (page 3-240).
