If necessary, use jack to raise or lower rear chassis until spaces between
front and rear chassis are equal.
Install upper spindle (3).
Install six capscrews (1) and lock washers (2) in upper spindle (3). Tighten
capscrews to 200 to 240 lb-ft.
Start thrust bearing (6) into front chassis. Using hydraulic pusher and 3-7/8
inches diameter sleeve, press bearing (6) into front chassis until bearing is
fully seated against thrust bearing (4) in upper spindle (3). Remove hydraulic
pusher and sleeve.
Install upper thrust plate cap (8) using six capscrews (1) and lock washers
(2). Tighten capscrews (1) evenly until thrust plate cap (8) contacts thrust
bearing (6).
Using thickness gage, measure space between thrust plate cap (8) and front
chassis (13). Record measurement. This measurement is thickness of shims (9
thru 11) that must be installed.
Support thrust plate cap (8) and loosen and remove six capscrews (1) and lock
washers (2). Remove thrust plate cap (8). Install shims (9 thru 11) thickness
as measured and recorded in step 1 above.
Position thrust plate cap (8) and install and tighten six lock washers (2) and
capscrews (1). Tighten to 200 to 240 lb-ft.
Install lubrication fitting (7).
NOTE
Repeat steps a through o above to install lower chassis spindle parts.
Install center drive shaft.
Remove jack stands and jacks.
Remove chocks from between rear chassis and rear axle trunnion and at each
tire.
Place transport/service link in released position.
Connect heater hoses and clamps, connect control valve hose to tube at hydrau-
lic pump, connect hose between flow control valve and check valve at check
valve, and connect front and rear wiring harness connectors (located above
transmission) (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).
Lubricate two lubrication fittings (7) (refer to LO 5-3805-262-12).
Be sure transport/service link is disengaged before driving vehicle.
Failure to do so could cause serious injury or death due to loss of
steering control.
