3-4. ALTERNATOR REPAIR (CONT)
INSPECTION/REPAIR (SHEET 3 OF 5)
i.
Inspect rectifier bridge
(23) for cracks and damaged
terminal studs or threads.
Replace rectifier bridge if
any of the above conditions
are seen, or if rectifier
bridge does not pass the
following test:
(1)
(2)
(3)
(4)
(5)
(6)
(7)
(8)
(9)
Using pocket knife blade, carefully pry up diode connectors at terminal
studs. Replace rectifier bridge if any diode connector is cracked or
missing. Diode connectors must not contact terminal studs or each other
during following steps.
Set multimeter to X1 or diode check range.
Hold multimeter red lead at
one diode connector, black
lead on negative heat sink.
Note multimeter indication,
then move black lead to di-
ode connector, red lead to
negative heat sink. Note
multimeter indication. There
should be one high multime-
ter indication and one low
multimeter indication.
Repeat step (3)
diode connector
heat sink.
Repeat step (3)
Hold multimeter
heat sink. Note
above at second
and negative
above at third diode connector and negative heat sink.
red lead at one diode connector, black lead on positive
multimeter indication, then move black lead to diode
connector, red lead to positive heat sink. Note multimeter indication.
There should be one high multimeter indication and one low multimeter
indication.
Repeat step (6) above at second diode connector and positive heat sink.
Repeat step (6) above at third diode connector and positive heat sink.
If both multimeter indications in any step (3) through (8) above are the
same, replace rectifier bridge (23).
