If multimeter pointermoves, there is a short circuitbetween housing (48) and fieldcoil (47). Replace terminalassembly (38 thru 46).Connect multimeter between twoterminal studs (43). If multi-meter pointer moves, there is ashort circuit between groundterminal stud and field coil(47). Replace ground terminalassembly (38 thru 46).Check that bearings (17 and 18) turn freely. If bearings do not turnfreely, replace.Check fan (19) for bent fins, distortion, cracks, or other damage. Re-place if any of these conditions are seen.Check brush plate (32) for damage to brush and spring holders, cracks,deformation, or other damage. Replace as necessary.Check drive end plate (16), cover band (24), and commutator end cover(37) for cracks, breaks, distortion, or other damage. Replace parts asnecessary.Inspect remaining parts for cracks, breaks, distortion, deformation, orthread damage. Replace parts as necessary.Test armature (21) (page 3-549).Afterwear.ta tortween00 totesting armature (21), check armature commutator for roughness orIf necessary, put armature in lathe and remove material from commu-bars until commutator bars are clean and smooth. Cut insulation be-commutator bars to a depth of 1/32 inch. Use abrasive cloth graderemove any rough edges from commutator bars.3-548
