4-1. ENGINE MAINTENANCE (CONT)
d. Crankshaft and Main Bearings (Cont).
INSTALLATION (SHEET 2 OF 5)
(8)
Lubricate 12 capscrews (10) threads and under each head using OE/HDO 30
engine oil. Install 12 washers (11) and capscrews (10). Tighten to 195 to
215 lb-ft.
(9) Loosen and remove 12 capscrews (10) and washers (11). Remove six main
bearing caps (12 thru 14).
(10) Check main bearing oil clearance measurement indicated by compressed
plastigage. Clearance must be between 0.0016 to 0.005 inch. If clearance
exceeds 0.005 inch, use undersize bearing liners (16 and 17) to provide
0.0016 to 0.0046 inch clearance.
(11) Lubricate main bearing cap liners (16 and 17) and crankshaft journals
using clean OE/HDO 30 engine oil.
(12) Lubricate capscrew (10) threads
and under heads using OE/HDO 30
engine oil.
(13) Install two thrust washers (15),
one at each side of number 5
bearing cap. Install number 5
bearing cap and thrust washers
and secure using two washers
(11) and capscrews (10). Tighten
capscrews to 195 to 215 lb-ft.
(14) Install five main bearing caps
(12 thru 14) and secure using
ten washers (11) and capscrews
(10). Tighten capscrews to 195
to 215 lb-ft.
(15) Position number 1 main bearing cap (9) on crankshaft and position same
number of shims (8) as were removed on number 1 main bearing cap.
(16) Install oil pump (page 3-94).
(17) Lubricate capscrew (6) threads and under
head using OE/HDO 30 engine oil. Install
two washers (7) and capscrews (6). Tighten
capscrews to 195 to 215 lb-ft.
(18) Position dial indicator on camshaft gear
and check backlash between camshaft gear
and crankshaft gear (19). Backlash must be
0.004 to 0.011 inch. If backlash exceeds
0.011 inch, replace camshaft gear and
crankshaft gear. Excessive backlash may
also be caused by worn camshaft bushings.
