TM 5-3805-258-24-2ENGINEDISASSEMBLY AND ASSEMBLYCRANKSHAFT MAIN BEARINGSCAUTIONMake sure the part number on the main bearingcap is toward the front of the engine and thenumber on the main bearing cap is the same asthe number on the cylinder block on the leftside of each main bearing cap.NOTE: Do not turn the crankshaft when Plastigage(B) is inb)Do notposition.Install main bearing caps (1) for No. 1 and3 and 5 main bearings. Put clean engine oilon the bolt threads and the face of thewashers and install the bolts. Tighten thebolts to a torque of 40 ± 4 N·m (30 ± 3lb. ft.).CAUTIONuse an impact wrench to tighten thebolts the additional 90°.7.8.9.c)d)Put a mark on each bolt and main bearingcap, then tighten the bolts 90° more.Remove the main bearing caps for No. 1, 3and 5 main bearings. Remove Plastigage(B) and measure the width of the Plasti-gage. The main bearing clearance must be0.076 to 0.165 mm (.0030 to .0065 in.).Maximum permissible clearance with usedbearings is 0.25 mm (.010 in.).Install main bearing caps (1) and tighten thebolts as in Steps 6b and 6c.Remove No. 2 and 4 mainSteps 2, 3, 4, 6 and 7 for thebearings.Check the crankshaft endbearing caps. DoNo. 2 and 4 mainplay with tooling(C). The end play is controlled by the thrustbearings on the No. 5 main bearing. End playwith new bearings is 0.064 to 0.368 mm (.0025to .0145 in.).
