Remove the crankshaft thrust bearingfrom the No. 5 main bearing.Remove the lower half of the main bearingfrom the main bearing caps.CAUTIONIf the crankshaft is turned in the wrong direc-tion, the tab on bearing will be pushed betweenthe crankshaft and bearing area in block whichcan cause damage to the block or crankshaft.3. Install tool (A) in the oil hole in the crankshaftjournal and remove the upper half of the mainbearing as the crankshaft is turned and themain bearing is moved out of the cylinderblock.NOTE: Install the main bearings dry when the clear-ance checks are made. Put clean engine oil on themain bearings for final assembly.CAUTIONMake sure the upper and lower halves of themain bearings are installed so the bearing tabsfit into the notch in cylinder block and the mainbearing caps.4. Install new lower half of main bearings (2) inthe main bearing caps. Use tool (A) and installthe upper half of the main bearings in thecylinder block.5. Put clean oil on the thrust bearing and install anew thrust bearing for the No. 5 main bearing.Install the thrust bearing with the identifica-tion “BLOCK SIDE” toward the cylinderblock and the tabs on the thrust bearings in themachined area in the cylinder block. The tabswill not let the thrust bearing be installed back-ward.NOTE: When the bearing clearance is checked andthe engine is in a vertical position, such as in thevehicle, the crankshaft will have to be lifted up andheld against the upper halves of the main bearings toget a correct measurement with the Plastigage. ThePlastigage will not hold the weight of the crankshaftand give a correct indication. If the engine is in ahorizontal position, it is not necessary to hold thecrankshaft up. Do not turn the crankshaft when thePlastigage is in position to check clearances.6. Check the main bearing clearances with Plasti-gage (B) as follows:a) Put a piece of Plastigage (B) on the surfaceof the lower half of the main bearing.5-143
