Install spring (2) and plunger (1) in camshaft (9).

Using a thickness gage, check
end clearance of idler gear.
Measure between thrust plate and
idler gear.
End clearance shall
be not more than 0.010 inch. Re-
place thrust plate, thrust
washer or idler gear in any com-
bination of parts necessary to
obtain 0.010 inch or less end
clearance.

Check backlash between drive
gear (6) and crankshaft gear
using dial indicator at drive
gear (6). Backlash shall be
0.004 to 0.011 inch. Replace
drive gear (6), crankshaft gear,
or worn bushing (10 thru 12) if
backlash exceeds 0.011 inch.

Check backlash between idler
drive gear (5) and idler gear
using dial indicator at idler
gear. Backlash shall be 0.003 to
0.010 inch. Replace idler drive
gear (5) or idler gear if
backlash exceeds 0.010 inch.
