tool by grinding a used pinion spindle
Install one thrust washer (14) on pinion spindle alining tool.
Put oil-soluble grease in pinion gear (15) bore then install on pinion
spindle alining tool. Oil-soluble grease will aid in keeping rollers
(16) positioned in bore of pinion gears.
Install 22 rollers (16) in space between pinion gear (15) bore and pin-
ion spindle alining tool.
Install remaining thrust washer (14) onto pinion spindle alining tool.
Remove pinion spindle alining tool and install assembled items (14 thru
16) into forward clutch carrier (17). Use pinion spindle alining tool to
center items (14 thru 16) on pinion spindle bore in forward clutch car-
rier (17).
Position forward clutch carrier (17), hub upward, in hydraulic press.
Start pinion spindle (13) into its bore.
Press pinion spindle (13) into bore to 0.130 to 0.150 inch below surface
of forward clutch carrier (17). Use 5/8 inch diameter rod.
Put a support under each pinion spindle (13). Use tool made in step (a)
above to stake both ends if pinion spindle. Make sure pinion gear (15)
rotates freely.
NOTE
Repeat steps (h) through (o) above for three remaining pinion gears (15)
of matched pinion gear set (15).
(3) Check clutch plates (2 and 3) with a straight edge to be sure they are
flat. If a clutch plate is not flat, replace it.
(4)
Inspect clutch plates (2) for smooth or almost smooth surface. If smooth
or almost smooth surface is seen , replace clutch plate.
(5)
Inspect clutch plates (3) for pitting, scoring, and other damage. Replace
as necessary.
