2-13. STEERING SYSTEM TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
3. SLOW OR HARD STEERING.
Step 1.
Remove steering wheel
(refer to separate TM
5-3805-262-20) .
Remove two screws and
slide cover with turn sig-
nal attached from steering
column and transmission
control lever mounting
bracket.
Position cover out of
the way.
Inspect steering column
support bearing for bind-
ing or damage.
a. Replace support bear-
ing if binding or dam-
aged (page 3-510).
b. If support bearing is not binding or damaged, go to step 2 be-
low.
Step 2.
Test flow control valve as described in page 3-571.
Pressure indication should be 2400 to 2600 psi.
a. If pressure indication is not 2400 to 2600 psi, remove and re-
pair flow control valve (page 3-566).
b.
If pressure indication is okay, go to step 3 below.
Step 3.
Perform hydraulic pump steering section test no. 1 (page 3-500).
a. If flow recorded in above test is less than 23 gallons per mi-
nute, check hydraulic filters and hoses, lines, and fittings be-
tween hydraulic pump and reservoir for an air leak. If hydraulic
filters and hoses, lines, and fittings are okay, hydraulic pump
is worn; remove and replace hydraulic pump (page 3-612).
b. If flow recorded in above test is more than 23 gallons per mi-
nute, hydraulic filters and hoses, lines, and fittings between
hydraulic pump and reservoir are okay.
