SLOW OR HARD STEERING (Cont).Step 8.Inspect sleeve and valve spool of steering gear for cracks, distor-tion, or damage.Put valve spool in sleeve and check for loose fit.a. If sleeve or valve spool are cracked, distorted, or damaged, orvalve spool fits loosely in sleeve, replace steering gear as acomplete assembly.b. If sleeve and valve spool check okay, go to step 9 below.Step 9.Check if steering gear housing is cracked or damaged.a. Replace steering gear as a complete assembly if housing iscracked or damaged.b. If steering gear housing checks okay, replace check ball (page3-518) .4. AUXILIARY STEERING SYSTEM DOES NOT OPERATE.Step 1.Remove auxiliary steering motor and pump (page 3-531).Separate auxiliary steering motor and pump (page 3-532).Test auxiliary steering motor (page 3-558).a. If auxiliary steering motor checks okay, go to step 2 below.b. If auxiliary steering motor does not check okay,place items as described in test (page 3-558).Step 2.Manually turn drive gear shaft of auxiliary steeringCheck that drive and driven gears turn smoothly.inspect and re-pump.a.
