Position either side of new
gasket (4) on cylinder block
and aline gasket holes with
cylinder block holes.
Don't use any other holes for
dowel pins in following step.
The two holes shown are a
tighter fit in gasket to
prevent gasket from moving
during cylinder head installa-
tion.

Install two dowel pins in cylinder block holes shown.
Lower cylinder head (3) onto cylinder block without moving gasket (4).
Immerse 10 capscrews (1)
and washers (2) in clean
engine oil.
Install 8 washers (2) and
capscrews (1) and tighten
with fingers. Do not in-
stall capscrews in the two
holes containing dowel
pins.
Remove two dowel pins
using dowel pin removal
tongs as shown.
Install two remaining washers
(2) and capscrews (1) in holes
that held dowel pins and
tighten with fingers.
Repeat steps (1) thru (8) above to install two remaining cylinder heads
(3).
Don’t tighten cylinder head capscrews until manifolds are installed and
associated hardware torqued (steps (10) and (11) below). Failure to do
so could cause damage to manifolds and improper seating of manifold gas-
kets.
(10) Install intake manifold (page 3-106).
(11) Install water manifold and exhaust manifold (refer to TM 5-3805-262-20).
