STARTER REPAIR (CONT)INSPECTION, TESTING, AND REPAIR (SHEET 3 OF 7)e.f.g.Inspect electrical lead (3) for cracked orbroken insulation or broken wire strandsat connection to terminals. If broken wirestrands are seen, replace electrical lead.Inspect brushes (17) for cracks, distortion,burned condition, or frayed or broken wireleads. Measure length of each brush asshown. Replace brush with wire leads as anassembly if brush is not more than 3/8 inchlong.Inspect armature (27) shaft for rough surface, grooves, bent condition, ordamaged splines. Inspect commutator for excessive wear or burned areas. Repaircommutator by turning in a lathe. Remove insulation from between commutatorbars to a depth and width of 1/32 inch, then use No. 00 abrasive cloth to re-move rough edges from commutator. Replace armature (27) if any of the aboveconditions are seen, or if armature does not pass the following tests:NOTEYour armature tester may differ from tester described in followingsteps. Follow instructions included with your armature tester.(1) Position armature in tester and turn power on. Set tester controls forgrounded winding test. Touch one test probe to armature core, the othertest probe to commutator. If tester lamp glows, armature winding or com-mutator is grounded and must be replaced.3-236
