Inspect electrical lead (3) for cracked or
broken insulation or broken wire strands
at connection to terminals. If broken wire
strands are seen, replace electrical lead.
Inspect brushes (17) for cracks, distortion,
burned condition, or frayed or broken wire
leads. Measure length of each brush as
shown. Replace brush with wire leads as an
assembly if brush is not more than 3/8 inch
long.
Inspect armature (27) shaft for rough surface, grooves, bent condition, or
damaged splines. Inspect commutator for excessive wear or burned areas. Repair
commutator by turning in a lathe. Remove insulation from between commutator
bars to a depth and width of 1/32 inch, then use No. 00 abrasive cloth to re-
move rough edges from commutator. Replace armature (27) if any of the above
conditions are seen, or if armature does not pass the following tests:
NOTE
Your armature tester may differ from tester described in following
steps. Follow instructions included with your armature tester.
(1) Position armature in tester and turn power on. Set tester controls for
grounded winding test. Touch one test probe to armature core, the other
test probe to commutator. If tester lamp glows, armature winding or com-
mutator is grounded and must be replaced.
