2-4. ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
6. ENGINE OVERHEATS.
Step 1.
Inspect cylinder heads for
cracks.
If cracks in cylinder heads are
not seen, start engine, and
operate at 1000 rpm for five
minutes.
With engine operating at idle
speed, check for engine coolant
coming out of exhaust manifold.
a. If cracks in cylinder heads
are seen, remove and re-
place cylinder heads (page
3-45) l
If engine coolant is coming
out of exhaust manifold, go
to step 2 below.
b. If cracks in cylinder heads not seen and engine coolant is not
coming out of exhaust manifold, go to step 3 below.
Step 2.
Remove cylinder heads (page 3-45).
Check for a cracked cylinder sleeve. Do this by cranking engine un-
til piston in cylinder being checked is at bottom of cylinder. Then
visually check cylinder sleeve.
Repeat for all six cylinders.

If a cylinder sleeve is cracked, notify general support mainte-
nance.
If cylinder sleeves are okay, replace cylinder head (page 3-45)
and forward to general support maintenance for repair (page
4-12).
Step 3. Check valve timing (page 3-8).
a. If valve timing is not okay as indicated by dial indicator hand
not indicating 0.053 inch, go to Malfunction 11, page 2-41.
b. If valve timing is okay as indicated by dial indicator hand in-
dicating 0.053 inch, go to step 4 below.
