ENGINE OVERHEATS.Step 1.Inspect cylinder heads forcracks.If cracks in cylinder heads arenot seen, start engine, andoperate at 1000 rpm for fiveminutes.With engine operating at idlespeed, check for engine coolantcoming out of exhaust manifold.a. If cracks in cylinder headsare seen, remove and re-place cylinder heads (page3-45) lIf engine coolant is comingout of exhaust manifold, goto step 2 below.b. If cracks in cylinder heads not seen and engine coolant is notcoming out of exhaust manifold, go to step 3 below.Step 2.Remove cylinder heads (page 3-45).Check for a cracked cylinder sleeve. Do this by cranking engine un-til piston in cylinder being checked is at bottom of cylinder. Thenvisually check cylinder sleeve.Repeat for all six cylinders.a.b.If a cylinder sleeve is cracked, notify general support mainte-nance.If cylinder sleeves are okay, replace cylinder head (page 3-45)and forward to general support maintenance for repair (page4-12).Step 3. Check valve timing (page 3-8).a. If valve timing is not okay as indicated by dial indicator handnot indicating 0.053 inch, go to Malfunction 11, page 2-41.b. If valve timing is okay as indicated by dial indicator hand in-dicating 0.053 inch, go to step 4 below.2-25
