Step 12. Remove timing gear cover (page 4-67).
Position dial indicator against crankshaft gear as shown.
Check crankshaft end play using a pry bar between crank throw and
number 2 or 4 main bearing cap.
End play must be 0.003 to 0.015 inch.
a. If crankshaft end

play exceeds 0.015 inch, install oversize
both sides of number 5 main bearing cap (page
play is not excessive, go to step 13 below.
Step 13. Check end clearance of idler
gear. Measure between thrust
plate and idler gear as shown.
End clearance should be not more
than 0.010 inch.
a. If end clearance is more than
0.010 inch, replace thrust
washer, thrust plate, or idler
gear in any combination of
parts necessary to obtain
0.010 inch or less end clear-
ance (page 4-54).
