7. ENGINE STALLS FREQUENTLY OR DOES NOT DEVELOP FULL POWER (Cont).
Step 9.
Remove five capscrews securing gear cover and gasket to timing gear
cover.
Discard gasket.
Check fuel injection pump drive gear to idler gear backlash using
dial indicator.
Backlash should be 0.012
inch.

Step 10. Do
If
If backlash exceeds O .012 inch, replace fuel injection pump
drive gear (page 3-136).
Recheck backlash. If backlash still exceeds 0.012 inch, replace
idler gear (page 4-54).
Perform fuel injection pump governor adjustments (page 3-14).
If backlash does not exceed 0.012 inch, go to Malfunction 1,
page 2-47.
transmission pressure checks (Malfunction 2, page 2-85).
transmission pressure checks are okay, go to step 11 below.
Step 11. Remove cylinder heads (page 3-45).
Check for a scored cylinder sleeve.
Do this by cranking engine until
piston in cylinder being checked is at bottom of cylinder. Then vi-
sually check cylinder sleeve.
Repeat for all six cylinders.
a. If a cylinder sleeve is scored
, notify general support mainte-
nance.
b. If cylinder sleeves are okay, go to step 12 below.
