2-4. ENGINE TROUBLESHOOTING (CONT)
MALFUNCTION
TEST OR INSPECTION
CORRECTIVE ACTION
11. DIAL INDICATOR HAND DOES NOT INDICATE 0.053 INCH WHEN PERFORMING VALVE TIMING
CHECK (PAGE 3-8) (Cont).
Step 6.
Check backlash between idler
drive gear and idler gear using
dial indicator at idler gear.
Backlash should be 0.003 to 0.010
inch.
a. If backlash exceeds 0.010
inch, replace idler drive gear
or drive gear (page 4-54).
b. If backlash is 0.003 to 0.010
inch, check for worn valve
lifters (page 4-61), worn or
damaged cam lobes on camshaft
(page 4-61) , worn camshaft
bushings (page 4-59) or worn
valve lifter bores in cylinder
block (page 4-61).
12. COMPRESSION OF ONE OR MORE CYLINDERS IS LESS THAN SPECIFIED WHEN PERFORMING
CYLINDER COMPRESSION CHECK (PAGE 3-12).
Step 1.
Put a small amount of oil in cylinder and repeat
check (page 3-12).
a. If compression check readings are now normal,
rings (page 4-42).
engine compression
replace piston
b. If compression check readings are still low, go to step 2 below.
Step 2.
Check valve timing (page 3-8).
a.
b.
If valve timing is not okay as indicated by dial indicator hand
not indicating 0.053 inch, go to Malfunction 11 above (page
2-41 ) .
If valve timing is okay as indicated by dial indicator hand in-
dicating 0.053 inch, compression leakage is either past valves
or a damaged cylinder head gasket. Remove cylinder head (page
3-45) associated with bad cylinder and check gasket. If cylinder
head gasket is okay, remove and replace valves (page 3-74).
