INSPECTION
(1)
Inspect bearing (22) and cone and rollers (15 and 20) by rotating and
checking that it turns smoothly. Check bearing balls and rollers for flat
areas, pitting, and scored, scratched, chipped, or cracked races.
NOTE
Replace bearing cups and cone and rollers as an assembly. Don’t use an
old bearing cup with a new cone and rollers or vice versa.
(2)
Inspect bearing cups (16 and 17) for flat areas, pitting, scoring, or
damage.
NOTE
Replace an item if inspection indicates need for replacement.
(3)
Inspect pinion (23) for pitting, scoring, distortion, deformation, or
broken or cracked teeth.
NOTE
Pinion (23) and ring gear are a matched set and must be replaced as a
set.
(4)
Inspect plug (24) , nut (25) , and thrust screw (26) for excessive wear or
damage.
(5)
Inspect yoke (9) for cracks, burrs, twisted splines, or other damage.
(6)
Inspect differential carrier (27) and cage (18) for cracks, breaks, or
other damage.
(7)
Inspect adjusting rings (5) for nicks, thread damage, or excessive wear.
(8)
Inspect all remaining parts for cracks, breaks, or damaged threads.
