If bearing (22) was removed, press new bearing onto shaft end of pinion
(23). Use hydraulic press and proper size sleeve bearing on inner race of
bearing. Using hammer and chisel, stake bearing onto pinion shaft.
If cone and rollers (20) was removed, press new cone and rollers onto
pinion (23) shaft. Use hydraulic press and proper size sleeve bearing on
inner race of bearing.
Install spacer (19) on pinion (23).
If bearing cups (16 and 17) were removed, press new bearing cups into
cage (18). Use hydraulic press and proper size sleeve bearing on circum-
ference of bearing cup.
Put cone and rollers (15) in cage (18).
Apply retaining compound to circumference of seal (14).
Put cage (18) , mounting surface down, in hydraulic press. Position seal
(14) on cage and press seal into cage using hydraulic press.
Lubricate cone and rollers (15 and 20) using hypoid gear oil.
Position cage (18) on pinion (23) shaft. Put cage (18) and pinion (23)
assembly in hydraulic press.
Using proper size sleeve bearing on outer race of cone and rollers (15),
press cone and rollers onto pinion (23) shaft. Press until cage (18) is
firmly seated against cone and rollers (20).
NOTE
If a hydraulic press having a gage that will measure tons is available,
do steps (11) through (15) below, otherwise go to step (16).
(11) Fasten one end of a piece of cord or string to cage (18). Wrap around
cage several times.
(12) Attach other end of cord to hand-held indicating dial scale.
(13) Increase hydraulic press pressure until press gage indicates 14 tons.
NOTE
Dont read scale when cage (18) begins to turn. Wait until scale is
moving smoothly and scale reading remains approximately constant.
(14) Pull scale smoothly on a horizontal line to measure preload of cones and
rollers (15 and 20). Watch scale while cage (18) is turning.
