Check backlash between drive
gear and crankshaft gear using
dial indicator at drive gear.
Backlash shall be 0.004 to
0.011 inch. Replace drive gear,
crankshaft gear, or worn bush-
ings if backlash exceeds 0.011
inch.
Check backlash between idler
drive gear and idler gear (23)
using dial indicator at idler
gear. Backlash shall be 0.003
to 0.010 inch. Replace idler
drive gear or idler gear (23)
if backlash exceeds 0.010 inch.
Apply non-hardening sealant to
cylinder block, from lower
mounting holes downward.
Install new gasket (20). Apply
non-hardening sealant to open
face of gasket, from lower
mounting holes downward.
Start to position timing gear cover (19) carefully while ensuring that it
clears water pump housing and crankshaft. It must slide behind camshaft
idler gear and locating dowels on rear of timing gear cover must engage
corresponding holes in cylinder block.
Install spacer (18), three lock washers (13), and capscrews (16). Do not
tighten capscrews.
Install two lock washers (13) and capscrews (15). Do not tighten cap-
screws.
Install two lock washers (13) and capscrews (12). Do not tighten cap-
screws .
Install two lock washers (13), capscrews (12), and nuts (14).
Tighten nine capscrews (12, 15, and 16) to 35 to 42 lb-ft.
Install fuel injection pump (page 3-164).
