Replace drive gear,crankshaft gear, or worn bush-ings if backlash exceeds 0.011inch.Check backlash between idlerdrive gear and idler gear (23)using dial indicator at idlergear. Backlash shall be 0.003to 0.010 inch. Replace idlerdrive gear or idler gear (23)if backlash exceeds 0.010 inch.Apply non-hardening sealant tocylinder block, from lowermounting holes downward.Install new gasket (20). Applynon-hardening sealant to openface of gasket, from lowermounting holes downward.Start to position timing gear cover (19) carefully while ensuring that itclears water pump housing and crankshaft. It must slide behind camshaftidler gear and locating dowels on rear of timing gear cover must engagecorresponding holes in cylinder block.Install spacer (18), three lock washers (13), and capscrews (16). Do nottighten capscrews.Install two lock washers (13) and capscrews (15). Do not tighten cap-screws.Install two lock washers (13) and capscrews (12). Do not tighten cap-screws .Install two lock washers (13), capscrews (12), and nuts (14).Tighten nine capscrews (12, 15, and 16) to 35 to 42 lb-ft.Install fuel injection pump (page 3-164).4-72
