TM 5-3805-262-344-4. FRONT AND REAR AXLES DIFFERENTIAL ASSEMBLY MAINTENANCE (CONT)a. DifferentialCarrier(Cont).ADJUSTMENT OF RING GEAR BACKLASH(1)(2)(3)Put dial indicator in positionon a tooth of ring gear.Hold pinion (23) shaft and movering gear back and forth tocheck backlash. If ring gear orpinion (23) are new, backlashshould be 0.012 inch; other-wise, backlash should be sameas backlash measured and re-corded during disassembly.Adjust backlash, if necessary,as follows:(a) If backlash is excessive, loosen adjusting ring (5) at tooth side ofring gear one notch and tighten other adjusting ring (5) one notch.Check backlash again (step (2) above). Repeat until backlash is correct.(b) If not enough backlash, loosen adjusting ring (5) at back side of ringgear one notch and tighten other adjusting ring (5) one notch. Checkbacklash again (step (2) above).Repeat until backlash is correct.(4)Check tooth contact (page 4-232).TOOTH CONTACT CHECK(1)(2)(3)(4)(5)(6)(7)(8)4-232Apply mixture of red lead and linseed oil to ring gear teeth.Rotate ring gear one complete revolution in each direction.Compare tooth pattern with pattern shown.Adjust backlash or change thickness of shims (13), as required, to obtaincorrect tooth pattern.Install and spread two cotter pins (1).(Front axle only.) Tighten thrust screw (26) until in contact with ringgear, then loosen 1/4 turn.(Front axle only.) Hold thrust screw (26) stationary and tighten nut(25).Install differential assembly (page 3-364 or 3-391).
