TOOLS: No. 1 Common Organizational Maintenance Tool Kit Drill bit, 0.156 inch diameter Retaining-ring pliers Safety glasses Torque wrench, 1/2 inch Automotive Mechanic’s Tool Socket wrench set, 1/2: Thickness gage Bore gage drive Kit inch drive Fine wire, 0.156 inch diameter maximum Hydraulic press Micrometer, zero to 5 inches Piston ring expander Plastigage Reamer (FSCM 10988 PN A43113) Ring compressor Wooden dowel, 1 inch diameter Ridge reamer Capscrews, three, 5/8-11 by 3/4 inch (FSCM 10988 PN 13-1012) Washers, flat, three, 1-3/4 inches OD, 11/16 inch ID, 9/64 inch thick (FSCM 10988 PN 95-10) MATERIALS/PARTS: Clean cloths (Appendix C, item 1) Cleaning solvent P-D-680 (Appendix C, item 2) Engine lubricating oil, OE/HDO 30 (Appendix C, item 9) Paint (Appendix C, item 22) Piston ring set (FSCM 10988 PN A48320) NOTE PRELIMINARY PROCEDURE: Cylinder heads removed (page 3-45), oil pan removed (page 3-89), and oil pump suction tube disconnected from oil pump (page 3-92). REMOVAL (SHEET 1 OF 3) (1) Check side clearance of each connecting rod (2) using thick- ness gage. Side clearance shall be between 0.007 to 0.016 inch. If side clearance exceeds 0.016 inch, replace connecting rod (2). If side clearance is less than 0.007 inch, regrind crank- shaft (page 4-23). 4-42
